Support Students and Improve Conditions in African Food Markets through New Crowdfunding Effort

As students of GCFSI’s second annual Frugal Innovation Practicum prepare for their fieldwork in Malawi, Africa, they are urging everyone to donate to their market improvement fund, 100 percent of which will be used to improve sanitation and infrastructure issues they observe in four Lilongwe markets.

In Lilongwe, the capital city of Malawi, many people earn their living through small-scale food enterprises. Although extremely important to urban economies and food security, failing infrastructure and a lack of basic sanitation undermine the safe exchange of food and results in poor working conditions for food retailers. Our students will work with food retailers, university faculty members, and municipal officials to identify, design, and implement “frugal” solutions to some of the most pressing problems in urban food markets.

With a goal of only $5,000, even modest contributions can make a difference. By kicking in a tax-deductible gift of $5, $10 or $20 and asking friends to do the same, you can help improve the daily lives of many African farmers and their families, as well as support the efforts of our next generation of food security leaders.
