Before leaving for Zambia, MSU mechanical engineering research assistant Adam Lyman ran into our own Lizzy LaFave to talk about his GCFSI-funded innovation project, the human-powered bean thresher for small-scale legume production in Zambia. These low-cost machines could play an integral role in improving food security, as well as increasing revenue for women in that region.

Two years ago, when the MSU Global Center for Food Systems Innovation chose to award an innovation grant to PhotosynQ, the young start-up project was entering the always critical proof-of-concept phase. Today, the nifty little gadget (better known as the MultispeQ) and its cloud-based data-aggregating platform called PhotosynQ are being used to battle malnutrition, drought, crop disease, and—yes, that's right—Godzilla. (But we'll get to that in a moment.)

In this webinar, Stephanie White, a researcher at the MSU Global Center for Food Systems Innovation, will discuss research conducted in M'Bour, Senegal, and use resilience theory to better understand urban food security by 'deconstructing' informal food systems. Stephanie's research is slated to be published in an edited volume, entitled Global Urban Agriculture: Convergence of Theory and Practice between North and South.

In the summer of 2015, faculty from Michigan State University's Global Center for Food Systems Innovation led a group of eight MSU students through its first-ever "Frugal Innovations Practicum." In February, as a direct result of the practicum, the Lilongwe City Council adopted the Local Revenue Enhancement Strategic Plan (LRESP), which will earmark 25 percent of the funds collected from market revenue for infrastructure development in those markets.

The Global Center for Food Systems Innovation (GCFSI) at Michigan State University (MSU) is pleased to announce that it has selected 10 winners of its most recent innovation challenge grants. The grants, made possible through GCFSI's partnership with the U.S. Agency for International Development, are awarded to enable the development, refinement, or scaling up of food system innovations, with the ultimate goal of helping to support food security efforts around the world.
